Case Studies:
How to accommodate bigger trucks in an existing facility with limited space.

The Problem:
Syncrude Canada Ltd., located in the oil sands of northern Alberta, is the world’s largest producer of light, sweet crude from oil sands, and the largest single source of oil in Canada. With the size and quantity of haul trucks increasing in recent years, Syncrude shop facilities required modifications to accommodate them. The most significant change was the increase in shop and wash bay overhead door sizes. The doors had to go from 8M wide to 12M wide, within the physical constraints of the existing buildings. |

The Solution:
Syncrude looked at various options in terms of fitting bigger trucks in their buildings. Engineering and maintenance staff visited a similar application at the Thunder Bay Coal Mine in Wright, Wyoming. They were impressed with what they saw and installed a Megadoor in their existing heavy duty shop and in a new wash bay. According to Syncrude’s Project Manager, “Shop space for haul trucks was at a premium, so the problem of taking up extra space on the sides and above the doorways associated with conventional doors was an issue. The Megadoor, with its light weight and minimal space requirements, provided the solution for these shops.”
In 1997, Glenridge Equipment installed four 12Mx10M overhead doors. Pleased with the performance of these doors, Syncrude installed many more.
